How to Get a Tenor API Key on Google Cloud

A step-by-step guide to creating a project on GCP, enabling the Tenor API, and getting your API key to search for GIFs in the editor.

Why You Need a Tenor API Key

Video Weaver integrates with Tenor to give you direct access to a massive library of animated GIFs, perfect for adding humor and visual flair to your videos. To enable this feature, you need to provide your own Tenor API key, which is managed through the Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Getting a key is free for most use cases and is a one-time setup.

Step 1: Go to the Google Cloud Console

Open your web browser and navigate to the Google Cloud Console: https://console.cloud.google.com/

You will need to log in with a Google account.

Step 2: Create or Select a Project

At the top of the page, next to the Google Cloud logo, you'll see a project dropdown.

  • If you have an existing project, you can select it.
  • If you are new, click the dropdown and then click "NEW PROJECT". Give your project a name (e.g., "My Media Apps") and click "CREATE".

Step 3: Enable the Tenor API

  1. Once your project is selected, use the search bar at the top of the console and type "Tenor API".
  2. Click on the "Tenor API" result under the "Marketplace" section.
  3. On the Tenor API page, click the "ENABLE" button. Wait for Google Cloud to enable the API for your project.

Step 4: Create and Get Your API Key

  1. After enabling the API, you'll be taken to its dashboard. Click on the "Credentials" tab in the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. At the top of the credentials page, click "+ CREATE CREDENTIALS" and select "API key".
  3. A dialog will pop up showing your new API key. Click the copy icon to copy it to your clipboard.

Important Security Note: For better security, it's highly recommended to restrict your API key. Click the "EDIT API KEY" button, and under "Application restrictions," select "HTTP referrers (web sites)." Add your website's domain to prevent others from using your key.

Step 5: Paste the Key into Video Weaver

  1. Return to the Video Weaver editor.
  2. Open the Project Settings panel (the gear icon on the left).
  3. Scroll down to the API Keys section.
  4. Paste your copied key into the "Tenor API Key" input field.

That's it! You can now go to the Assets Panel, click on the Tenor tab, and start searching for the perfect GIF to add to your projects.
