Removing Video & Image Backgrounds

The Background Removal tool can work on a selected clip or a file. Auto Removal supports images and videos; SAM2 Click Select lets you point to the foreground subject in a still image.

1. Open Background Removal and choose a source

Open Tools → Background Removal. Choose Upload File to select an image or video, or choose Current Clip and load the selected timeline clip.

2. Choose an AI mode

• Keep Auto Removal selected for automatic foreground segmentation. Choose a model in Model Selection; the list shows model sizes and whether a model is cached.
• For a still image, choose SAM2 Click Select and click the subject you want to keep. This mode is unavailable for videos and prepares about 75 MB of model data the first time.

3. Process and inspect the output

Choose the output type: Foreground keeps the subject, Mask returns the segmentation mask, and Background keeps the removed area. Pick a background color or transparency where applicable, then select Process. Review the preview, especially hair, transparent objects, and edges against similar colors.

4. Save the result

Choose Save to Library to add the processed media to your project. The Download button saves a standalone result to your device. For a selected clip, check that the processed output has the right duration and framing before replacing the original in your edit.
